Should You Do A Background Check On The Person Whom You Are Dating? By Russell Irving Background checks. It seems that those 2 words could only help you out when deciding whether ro not to date/continue dating a someone. Why not? Well, let's look briefly at several of the ways in which this action could backfire on you or, at the least, not work out as you had hoped it would. #1 DATA ENTRY ERRORS - You would be amazed at how many data errors occur. Oftentimes, data entry folks are rewarded for their speed and not necessarily their accuracy. A simple juxtaposition in a person's SSN could result in you believing that they have a criminal record. Or any number of other issues (at least issues that you care about). #2 MISTAKES ON YOUR END - Similar to the above, but involves you mis-typing information. It happens to the best of us! #3 EVERYONE HAS 'A PAST' - So unless they are a murderer or a serial criminal of some other type, nothing says that they have not left that 'negative' behavior behind them. Perhaps they didn't, but you should perhaps keep an open and cautious mind. #4 THEY FIND OUT THAT YOU SEARCHED - Some of these background checking sites inform the subject of the search that there was one done. A subset of these will even let the person know who did the searching. THis might be interpreted as a sign of mistrust, even by the squeaky-cleanest of individuals. #5 AFTER LEARNING THAT YOU CHECKED UP ON THEM, THEY MIGHT RECIPROCATE - In other words, they might do a search on you. But what if their search has errors or you had done something wrong, years ago, and have changed your ways. #6 PERHAPS SOMEONE WHOM THEY ENDED A RELATIONSHIP WITH HAS DECIDED TO SPREAD LIES ONLINE OR ELSEWHERE - This happens more often than you might wish to believe. Well, there you have it. Some of the ways in which doing a background search could backfire on you. 'Nuff said. copyright - R. Irving 2012
